Pasumai FM, the People’s Radio, completes today, on the 13th of April 2008,  its first year of service to the community, to sustainable development and to the cause of social justice and equality.  Three hundred and sixty six days of entertainment and education, of interaction inducing mutual growth, have passed by making our society more egalitarian, our youth and women more self-supporting, our children more hopeful of the future.

Anti-child-labour activities, child rights awareness programmes, formal and non-formal education initiatives and projecting child welfare as an integral part of social welfare were the highlights of the pro-children programmes of the Radio. Women empowerment through awareness and sensitization, through economic emancipation and through training and organization was given due importance. Programmes to unleash the dynamic energy of our youth through education and training leading to individual development and collective action were produced and aired.  The farmers and labourers were made ready to meet the challenges of globalization, market economy, consumerism and communal fragmentation.

Health and hygiene programmes were aired regularly, highlighting the importance of cleanliness, mother and child health care, the dangers of tobacco and liquor, the precautions against HIV/AIDS and contagious diseases, etc.  The traditional forms of theatre, art, craft, customs, culinary habits, therapies, apparels, jewellery, etc. were brought to the lime light to preserve and propagate our national identity and cultural heritage.     Environmental hazards of industrialization and the treatment of effluents, the need for eco-friendly farming methods, protection of the environment and the preservation of natural resources and practical solutions to the problems of sustainable development were discussed.

Ample opportunities were given to the budding talents of the local community to present their creations.  Interaction with listeners through phone calls, letters and e-mails was given prime importance.  People were given freedom to influence the making of the programmes through their suggestions, criticisms and comments. Those who made exceptional contributions to the welfare of the community and those who had the knowledge and skill that would be beneficial to the whole community were sought out to make them share their wisdom, skill and knowledge with the listeners, with opportunity for interaction whenever possible.

The creation of an egalitarian society enjoying the fruits of sustainable development equitably is the objective and dream of Pasumai FM.  The objective of our projected World-Wide Web Radio is the same with the whole world, the whole human race, as the beneficiary.
